2016-2017 Ongoing Projects

During the Rotary Year 2016-2017 we will continue to support the students we have been supporting at the Nkoilale Primary School and will extend our reach into the local community by providing Solar Lighting to some of the communities most needy families.  As needed we will also support students who graduate from Primary School and choose to go on to Secondary School.  This will be done using designated donations to the Lake Chelan Rotary Community & International Fund (The Fund).  The Fund is a 501(c)3 organization and therefore all donations can be tax deductible under USA IRS rules.  If you would like to help, please send a person check to: Nkoilale Brighter Future, PO Box 601, Chelan, Wa. Scholarships

Lake Chelan Rotary supports 21 young women and 3 young men by providing a scholarships to cover their daily needs including school uniforms, bedding, toiletries and boarding at Nkoilale Primary School.  The objective is to support these young people through completion of primary School and beyond for those who are able to go on to secondary school.  The cost of each primary school scholarship is USD$150 per year (for three school terms).

Many young people walk significant distances to get to school each day.  This proves to be very tiring and limits their ability to study and get the best from each and every school day.  Eric (opposite) is one such student.  As Eric will tell you, being able to board at the school has made a big difference for him.  He know longer has to walk 10km to school each day, his grades have improved and he is no long tired before he starts school and can focus on his studies.  In Mathematics he has the best grades in school.  Eric is also one of the many young people who would not be able to attend school without financial assistance.

Each student is required to wear his or her school uniform during class time. Students whose parents cannot afford a school uniform often do not go to school. School uniforms are important to a student and cost approximately $60 per student. A uniform may last a student for two years and can then be passed on to a brother, sister or to another student in need. They only wear their uniforms during class time changing into casual clothes as soon as their classes finish.

Solar Lights

Solar powered lighting for the homes in the village is very helpful. Most of the students who do not live at the school have nowhere to do their homework after dark. Solar lighting in a home enables them to read and do their homework after dark. In addition, light in a home helps the women to do their bead work in the evening. They are busy doing other jobs during the day including looking after the animals and fetching water. An unexpected benefit of solar light has been to cut down on the number of creditor attacks against a families cattle and goats.
