The Shine On Scholarship fund was established in 2015 to honor the life of Dean Allen, a senior at Chelan High School who had a fatal accident while skiing with his good friend Jannik Tischer. Jannik was a Rotary Exchange student from Germany, living with the Allen family. Together, the Allen Family and Lake Chelan Rotary offer this scholarship.
In Dean’s short seventeen years on earth he struggled with adversity. Dean had a unique gift of rising above his own struggles and somehow had the ability and the drive to shine. No one thing could keep Dean’s spirit from shining. Dean believed in tomorrow and his own personal growth, yet never failed to help others in their pursuits of their own growth and vision. After Dean’s passing, his family heard the phrase “Dean Shine” and thus the name Shine On was born. The Allen family not only wants to honor Dean’s shining spirit through this scholarship, but they want the spirit of Shine On to resonate with college bound students who have shined through their own difficulties and who rose above the struggles thrown their way.
The Shine On Scholarship Fund promotes the development of young adults who demonstrate qualities of courage, honor, compassion, and commitment by overcoming adversity in their lives, or individuals who exemplify these qualities while helping others overcome their adversities. With the support of the Chelan, Manson and surrounding communities, the Shine On Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for college bound – graduating high school students and GED recipients through scholarships for college expenses. All qualified students from local high schools are eligible. The selected candidates, by way of their demonstrated growth in overcoming adversity or helping others overcome adversity, will perpetuate Dean’s legacy by keeping his light shining on.
